This marks the conclusion of an iconic period for ongoing anime, with Toei Animation revealing a revised release plan for the beloved series, which has been airing for over a quarter-century and featured numerous non-canon storylines. Commencing in January, once the Egghead Island arc wraps up, the anime will go on a quarterly break until spring, when the next major arc kicks off.
Updated Production Plan
From now on, the series will produce a pair of cours every year for a cap of 26 episodes. Toei explains this will help the anime to “dive even deeper into the heart of the ONE PIECE world — including more material, rhythm, and timing of the source material.” However, Toei conclude by hinting at “thrilling developments” during the hiatus period, which suggests additional One Piece content, such as Netflix's live-action season 2, set to premiere in the interim.
Previous Hiatus Benefits
The series anime previously took a half-year pause that began in late 2024 and ended in April 2025. The intermission was for the animators to improve the animation quality and let the comic to get further ahead to avoid a faster anime pace and repetitive summaries. The show couldn't benefit more from this respite, and it has managed to deliver viewers with numerous action sequences, high-quality animation, and less filler than previously.
Adopting Modern Trends
While some recap episodes appeared during this season, the positive effects of this new production schedule far surpass the odd pause in the story. This also gives the manga, which is currently in the thick of the latest arc, to extend its lead on the anime. According to the announcement, this may lead to one episode of the anime covering a single manga chapter, with some alternatively handling one and a half chapters or additional to compensate for time.
This concludes of an era for anime, as One Piece is the final major title to ditch the traditional method of creation, which prioritized airing for most of the calendar. This explains why iconic series such as Bleach, and of course One Piece have so many filler arcs, and the standard of the art can vary widely between installments and the next. Today, series creation is organized in cours, with a couple at most coming out each annually, enabling improved visuals and greater accuracy to the source material.
