In a significant development ahead of the upcoming national polls, a pair of high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance comes in the aftermath of large-scale and deadly youth-led protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the removal of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Address Youth Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially vowed to prioritize the grievances highlighted by the new generation. This promise comes after the turbulent anti-graft protests that took place in September, which resulted in significant loss of life.

"Agreement must not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane after the deal was signed.

The September revolt was triggered by widespread frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a catalyst for underlying resentment stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of systemic political corruption.

Terms of the Fresh Political Partnership

According to the formal agreement, the roles for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

• Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread discontent with the country's older political leadership. He has previously served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
• Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central figure in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He played a role in setting up the interim government that came to power after the ousted administration was dissolved.

Broader Political Consultations Taking Place

In a separate development, the current interim prime minister recently conducted meetings with a number of leading political leaders. These talks included ex- prime ministers and the heads of rival mainstream parties, marking the first such gathering since the period of the uprising.

Following these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to state that holding a credible election is a collective duty. The message reiterated the government's dedication to guaranteeing a safe and open atmosphere for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
