The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States on five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted individuals who have been central to efforts to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the regulations are essential to control hate speech and falsehoods.
