Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opening batter Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of comments made by captain Stokes regarding the team environment not being "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder made this message in several interviews following his team's defeat in the second match of the Ashes against Australia previously.

Ahead of the third Test, where England are staring at a series loss with a match to spare, Stokes noted he had allowed his sentiment to "circulate freely" within the playing group.

"I've done the necessary discussions over the past two days that I required," said the England leader.

But, after Crawley scored a knock of 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the media with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

The captain issued his "weak men" observation subsequent to England were beaten in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The team afterwards took a break to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and third Tests.

Before this match, he said his players had held "honest" talks and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their battle to stay in contention in the series.

Nevertheless, Crawley stated the messaging from the captain and coach Brendon McCullum had stayed in line with their previous three years in charge.

"It's been extremely upbeat, the same as always," noted Crawley. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with great liberty. It felt like we could do an extraordinary feat entering this game."

The Hosts On the Verge of Rapid Series Victory

The opener's wicket late on Saturday came during a decisive three-wicket burst by Australian spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in a short spell – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – meant the chasing side 207-6 in pursuit of a notional target of 435 runs.

Consequently, the home team require just four more wickets on Sunday's final day to secure an unassailable 3-0 advantage after three Tests.

A loss will extend England's winless run in this country to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth straight overseas Ashes loss.

This series is set to be decided in only eleven days of play – after England losing the initial matches in two and four days respectively.

The last time 1921, when the Australians sealed victory in England in eight days, has the destination of the urn been determined more swiftly. The hosts have also won in 11 days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"This is disappointing," admitted Crawley. "We came here to win the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel at this point."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we will certainly approach it with that mindset," he continued.

"The challenge has been tough. Australia is a formidable team. It was inevitably tough touring here to face them. They were the front-runners and they've proven why."

Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

Although Crawley's innings in Adelaide likely secures doubts about his immediate future in the side, Ollie Pope looks under immense pressure for his spot in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 runs in the team's second innings on day four, adding to his modest returns versus Australia.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has failed to score a fifty and averages just 17.62.

Only one other England player since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has featured as many times in the top order in the Ashes and recorded a poorer average.

But, Crawley said any notion his teammate is being scrutinised originates with "the media" – referring to the journalists – "and not within the team."

"We all know how good of a player he is," added Crawley. "He has had a productive year to be frank."

"He has played several excellent innings. It is noise from the outside. There's no chat of that nature regarding Pope amongst the players," Crawley concluded.
